In certain high-risk industrial environments such as chemical plants and water treatment facilities ensuring workplace safety isn’t just about managing daily tasks, it’s about preparing for the worst-case scenario.

When a worker is splashed with chemicals, acids, or toxic compounds every second counts. Site safety regulations state that an injured worker must have access to a decontamination unit rapidly and with no obstructions. However, there are certain outside factors that can affect this. Facilities could experience a sudden mains water failure, water pressure could drop, or the Irish winter could freeze the supply pipes.

In these high-risk environments hoping for the best is not full compliance. That is exactly why these sites rely on independent systems like the Hughes Safety Shower EXP-MH-14KS/1500. Read on for a detailed breakdown of why this heavy-duty, tank-fed emergency safety shower is the best choice for risk management on industrial sites.

Gravity Fed Independence

The EXP-MH-14KS/1500 safety shower features a massive 1,500 litre overhead water tank. Under international and European compliance frameworks, such as ANSI Z358.1 and EN 15154, an emergency safety shower must deliver continuous, high-volume water flow for a minimum of 15 minutes and at a specified flow rate of at least 76 litres per minute.

Having the water tank hold 1,500 litres of water above the shower head means the EXP-MH-14KS/1500 completely bypasses the need to rely on a facility's mains plumbing. Even during a random event of a power outage or a water mains bursting, this shower holds more than enough volume to deliver the full and uninterrupted 15 minute decontamination ensuring your site remains fully compliant and your workers remain fully protected.

Insulated and Heated Engineering

Outdoor emergency showers are available in unheated models. However, an outdoor shower becomes useless if the water inside it is completely frozen or dangerously cold. If an incident occurs on site such as a chemical burn, near-freezing water can induce rapid hypothermia or thermal shock. It can also cause the injured worker to jump out of the shower before the chemicals can be fully washed off.

The “EXP” in the name of the shower indicates that this model is engineered to work in extreme environments and hazardous zones:

  • Polyurethane Insulation: The 1,500 water tank is encased in a heavy-duty, insulated jacket that prevents freezing temperatures from affecting the water inside.

  • Flameproof Immersion Heaters: The shower includes integrated ATEX certified electrical immersion heaters. These heaters constantly maintain the tank’s water temperature and ensure it remains in the safety standards tepid range of 16°C to 38°C.

Materials Built for Harsh Environments

To withstand corrosive industrial environments and winter weather every part of the EXP-MH-14KS/1500 is engineered with specialised and highly durable materials.

  • Cubicle and Water Tank: Constructed from Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP), offering maximum resistance to corrosion, weathering, and heavy impacts.

  • Internal Pipework and Valves: Engineered from high-grade stainless steel and industrial plastics to ensure they stay rust and scale free.

  • Activation Mechanisms: The panic bar and the eyewash bowl are made from chemically inert ABS plastic so they never rust, seize, or degrade.

The Core Bundle

At Gaslines we supply the EXP-MH-14KS/1500 as a fully preassembled core bundle.

  • Full GRP Side Panels: The shower comes equipped with Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP) side panels to form a protective cubicle. This cubicle helps to shield the injured user from wind, rain, or snow while they are using the shower.

  • Dual Action Activation: The shower features a high-visibility overhead panic bar as well as a built-in walk-on foot control panel, meaning the user instantly triggers the water flow hands free in situations where they may be unable to pull down the panic bar.

  • Integrated Internal Eyewash: Mounted securely inside the cubicle, the eyewash features twin, aerated sprays designed to gently flush the eyes and face without causing any further damage to the users eyes.

  • Built-In Monitoring: Featuring a built-in water level indicator and an external temperature gauge (-20°C to +60°C) to allow safety managers to check the shower’s readiness at a single glance.
